RihannaBarbados-born Rihanna (Robyn Rihanna Fenty) is a singer-songwriter, actress, and fashion designer. When she was 15, Rihanna formed a girl group with two classmates. The trio auditioned for Evan Rogers, and according to Rogers, “The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist.” Rihanna signed to Rogers’ production company, Syndicated Rhythm Productions. Rihanna’s connection to Rogers led to her signing with Jay-Z’s Def Jam label.
Rihanna found success right away. Her first single “Pon de Replay” hit No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and her sound was likened to Beyonce (if Beyonce had grown up in the West Indies). A mere eight months after the release of her debut album, Rihanna released her second album, A Girl Like Me, which boasted her first number one hit, “SOS.”
Rihanna continued to develop her unique blend of RnB, Hip Hop, and Reggae, and by 2007, she released the album that catapulted her to stardom: Good Girl Gone Bad. Her first single from that album, “Umbrella,” reached number one on most charts around the world and earned her first Grammy award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
With her most recent number one hit, “Diamonds,” Rihanna has earned twelve number one singles (tied for fifth all-time with Madonna and the Supremes).
